The older I get the more I enjoy the transition into fall each year. The crisp cool air and glorious autumn leaves somehow ease the dread of the approaching winter freeze here in the Midwest. Not surprisingly, fall has become my favorite time of year to enjoy Godâs beautiful creation and be out and about with my husband.
If youâre looking for some new ways to spend time with your spouse or significant other here are 20 fall date ideas to try!
20 Fall Date Ideas
Thereâs a little something for everyone on this list (and many of them are completely free đ )! These fall date ideas are mostly outdoor outings with a few indoor ideas sprinkled in for cozy evenings inside.
1. Fruit Farm
There is nothing quite like fresh hand-picked fruit! Hitting a local fruit farm for some apples, berries, peaches, or some homemade jam is an easy way to get in some quick exercise and grab a healthy snack. Or get those creative juices flowing and see what kind of delicious baked goods you can come up with using your purchases when you arrive home.
2. Pumpkin Patch
Apart from the simple enjoyment of hunting for the perfect pumpkin, most pumpkin patches also have a variety of other fun activities to experience- such as corn mazes, hayrides, and tasty apple cider and freshly baked donuts to name a few.
3. Hiking
Hiking will forever be a favorite pastime of mine! And just so happens to be one of the best fall first date ideas! There are so many stunning landscapes to explore throughout our world- and thereâs no better time to do it than autumn.
Whether youâre going for a leisurely romantic hand-holding walk at sunset or an adventure- seeking, heart- pumping hike youâll never be disappointed. Soaking in the goodness of Godâs creatures, forests, mountains, lakes, and oceans canât help but bring about peace and contentment.

4. Harvest Festival
Harvest festivals are a fun way to bring the community together each year. Freshly popped kettle corn, apple butter making demonstrations, games, family friendly hayrides, and food trucks are a few of the festivities you might come across at one of these events.
5. Axe Throwing
Yes, itâs actually a thing, and people seem to really enjoy it! This one may be more for the men, but us ladies can still enjoy a little competition and perfecting our aim! No need to have prior experience, many of these axe throwing lounges offer a safe environment and instructors to give you a lesson before you begin.
6. Football Game
This one is a classic fall date idea, but one that many of us stop doing during the busy seasons of life. Obviously you can opt for a college or professional game, but you can also just stop by your local high school on a Friday night to cheer on your hometown. You canât go wrong by showing some support for your local high school teams!
7. Trail Riding
There are many state parks throughout the country that offer guided horseback riding tours during certain times of the year. A peaceful ride on these gentle giants is a sure way to relax.
8. Amusement Park
Some people arenât aware that many amusement parks remain open throughout the fall. Theyâre often much less crowded during the autumn months and the cooler weather is an added bonus!
9. Star Gazing
It is often the most simple (and free) things in life that bring about the most pleasure. I will always have a soft spot for star gazing, partially because my husband proposed to me under the stars <3 . (Definitely one of my favorite romantic fall date ideas.)
Gazing up at the billions of twinkling lights dangling from the nighttime sky has a way of humbling us. Doing so with your best friend by your side makes it all the more memorable.
To imagine that the Creator of these majestic stars also saw fit to create me, love me (even at my worst), and send His Son to die in my place is truly a beautiful act of pure grace and mercy. Iâd encourage you to get out and enjoy those stars. Allow the quiet to still your thoughts and point you back to your Creator.
10. Picnic at the Park
Bring a blanket and pack a tasty homemade lunch for an enjoyable afternoon at your local park. Listen to the sweet songs of birds overhead and take in the beauty of the colorful autumn leaves around you.
11. Outdoor Movie
Although drive-in movies are becoming a thing of the past, they are still out there! Do some research to discover if there is one within driving distance of you. Some of them will even play the old classics that may just bring back some memories.
If thatâs not an option for you, just create your own outdoor movie area! Cell phone movie projectors make it super easy to project a favorite movie in your own backyard on the side of a barn, house, or shed.
12. Go On A Bike Ride (The Perfect Fall Date Idea!)
Map out a bike route in your town or find a lengthy trail at a nearby park to get some relaxing exercise in together.
13. Camping
This one might be the perfect weekend getaway for you and your spouse! Grab your camping gear and head out for an overnight adventure or check out Glamping.com for nearby luxury accommodations surrounded by the beauty of nature.
14. Kayaking
Enjoy the serene waters of a local lake up close and personal by renting a two person kayak. If that sounds a bit too low key you can always opt for separate kayaks and some friendly competition.
15. Miniature Golf
This one can be enjoyed any time of year because of the indoor and outdoor options, but is another cheap fall date idea that guarantees some laughs. If youâve never attempted glow-in-the-dark mini golf Iâd suggest you give it a try đ
16. Hot Air Balloon Ride
The fall months are prime time for hot air balloon rides in our area. Itâs not uncommon to actually catch a few floating across the sky on a calm autumn day. Because these are so weather dependent itâs a good idea to have a couple of back up dates in mind in case of inclement weather, but the spectacular views canât be beat.
17. Campfire & Smores
I think we sometimes forget that it doesnât have to be an elaborate planned outing to be memorable. If youâre looking for another free fall date idea just step out into your own backyard and start a fire.
Grab some chocolate, graham crackers and roast some marshmallows! Then have fun asking each other questions and getting to know each other better. Iâve learned that even after 10 years of marriage there are still fun and fascinating things that I can learn about my husband. These conversation cards may help!
18. Bake a Fall Inspired Treat & Do a Puzzle
I donât know about you, but when pumpkin spice season comes around Iâm one happy camper! Bake a fall inspired treat together and then work on a challenging puzzle.
19. Watch a Wholesome Love Story Movie
Itâs no surprise that ladies are typically up for a good love story, but I think if men are honest they enjoy a good one too. Check out an oldie but goodie or browse this list for some wholesome date night movies.
20. Nerf Gun War/ Paintball Soft
Whether she’s dating, a newlywed, or has been married for 50 years- a lady never outgrows her desire to be pursued. Thankfully, men never seem to outgrow their desire to pursue, so weâre in good company.
Be playful and have some fun chasing each other during a Nerf gun war. And while itâs true that traditional paintball may be a bit too rough for females, in recent years theyâve introduced âpaintball softâ which is a less intense version geared towards newbies, youth, and coed groups.
What Should I Do For A Fall Date?
Whether youâre looking for an adventure packed fall outdoor date idea or a more quiet and relaxing option there are plenty of choices this time of year. Some additional ideas include:
- Try out some delicacies at a new bakery
- Food truck tour
- Ziplining
- ATV riding
- Take a trip to the zoo
- Visit a dog shelter to pass out treats and play with these sweet creatures
I hope this list of fall date ideas is helpful for you and that youâre able to create some new memories with your loved one!
