When I initially began to eliminate gluten and dairy from my diet a few years ago I was a bit in the dark as to what I could eat and how to keep my calories up. Through some trial and error I eventually discovered some delicious gluten and dairy free snacks and meals that have become my go to options.
I’ll admit that those first few months were challenging. These two ingredients seemed to be sneakily hiding in the majority of my favorite snacks besides plain fruits and veggies. Since my decision to cut gluten and dairy out of my diet more than four years ago I’ve learned a wealth of information that I would love to share with you!

What Can I Eat On A Gluten Free and Dairy Free Diet?
If you are new to eating a gluten and dairy free diet you may be wondering what exactly you can eat going forward. There are so many wonderful options out there! I’d encourge you to primarily focus on eating a clean well-rounded diet consisting of wholesome vegetables and fruit, lean meats, nuts, seeds, and healthy oils, as well as whole grains (sans gluten of course).
It truly is amazing the plethora of tasty snack and meal options out there just using the food that our Creator provided us. However, rest assured that you can still enjoy a not so healthy sweet treat here and there too! So Delicious currently has over 10 varieties of their dreamy dairy free “ice cream” made of cashewmilk! I’m not getting paid to say this, I just genuienly love their brand!
Is Gluten and Dairy Free Good For You?
Many people are under the assumption that going gluten and dairy free is good for your health. I would say that yes, it absolutely can be, but it can also be very unhealthy. The gluten free industry has exploded over the last ten years. Just about any processed food on the market now has a gluten free alternative.
Just being labled “gluten free” does not make a product healthy. Many gluten free options out there are loaded with sugar, unhealthy fats, and additional processed ingredients that make them just as unhealthy as their gluten containing counterparts. The same is true for dairy free alternatives as well.
There are definitely exceptions to the rule (brown rice pasta, nut and seed crackers, almond bread, and cashew “cheese” to name a few), but overall I’d steer clear of opting for packaged gluten and dairy free snack ideas and meal choices. You’re much better off following more of a Paleo diet or just eating a variety of fresh wholesome foods that will truly give your body the nourishement and fuel it needs to thrive.
Adopting A Gluten and Dairy Free Lifestyle
In closing, I understand that making the jump from our traditional American way of eating to going gluten and dairy free can feel intimidating and overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to. When I first began my journey I was on a mission to alleviate some IBS symptoms, but more importantly I was trying to navigate the waters of getting my newly diagnosed food allergic one year to eat solids.
These both appeared to be unwanted obstacles at the time. However, they were also the exact motivation I needed to do the extra research and experimentation necessary for both of us to succeed at eating this way. In time I began figuring things out and have since heard of so many other families eating this way as well. Some by choice and others for health reasons.
I began this journey more than four years ago and can honestly say that I actually prefer eating this way. Whether or not you choose to eliminate certain foods completely or just try to be more mindful of what you’re putting into your body, please remember that our bodies crave those nutrients needed to refuel and thrive.
I hope this sheds some light in this area and is a help to you. Please feel free to comment below if you’d like to share any of your favorite gluten and dairy free snacks with the rest of us!

So happy to follow you as well! Two of my four kids have food allergies as a symptom of Eosinophilic Esophagitis. I definitely understand the world of being Mama in an allergy realm. Mine are top 8 free along with a few other foods like legumes. My husband launched a CrossFit gym about 12 years ago so we stepped into the Paleo world then. We feel best when we eat a clean diet as well. We even tried the Carnivore Diet for a while earlier this year and there are many components of it that I still appreciate. Thanks for saying hi on my newest blog and I’m excited to meet other women in similar spaces.
